Dental Fillings for Cavities & More
Have you ever had a cavity? If so, you’ve probably had it fixed through a dental filling process. Dental fillings are a common dental procedure, but while they might be standard, they are also very important—cavities are no joke.
When you have a cavity or other problem with your teeth, the issue needs to be addressed right away. Otherwise, the cavity will worsen and can lead to discomfort, pain, and may end up requiring a more expensive or invasive treatment, such as a root canal. With dental fillings, it’s easy to remove the damaged part of your tooth and then restore it to its regular function before any major issues arise.
Wondering whether or not you need a dental filling or have questions about the treatment? You’ve come to the right place! Dr. Marcus Torrey is an experienced dentist in Pullman, WA, who offers general dentistry services, including fillings. Call today to find out more or book an appointment!
Request An AppointmentWhat Is a Dental Filling?
Dental fillings are materials made to repair small holes or imperfections in teeth. As mentioned above, they are usually used to fill the small hole left after the dentist removes decay from a cavity.
However, dental fillings have other uses, too. They are often used to repair various cracks, chips, or worn-down teeth. The filling material can reshape the tooth or even build up the missing tooth material.
Types of Dental Fillings
Dental fillings can be made of many materials. Sometimes, they are made of one single material, while other times they are a combination or composite of different things.
Some of the most common kinds of dental fillings include:
- Metals: In the past, metal fillings were the norm, but most people don’t like how they look as they don’t match natural teeth. So, while options like gold filings are still available, most people opt for another material. However, these are sometimes used for back teeth.
- Porcelain or ceramic: Porcelain is a popular choice for fillings because it matches natural teeth. These fillings are also rather resistant to stains, making them a good, natural-looking choice.
- Composite resin: These fillings are created using a mix of plastic and glass materials. They can be specifically matched to your teeth. This option also offers extra support and is great for other issues beyond cavities.
At Torrey Dental, we will educate you on your options and discuss the right kind of filling for you, one that will restore the look and function of your smile and fit your budget. Request an appointment today.
The Dental Filling Treatment Process
A dental filling is a relatively quick procedure that’s minimally invasive. In less than an hour—usually around 30 minutes—your cavity will be fixed, and you can get back to normal mouth function.
Here’s how the process goes:
- First, Dr. Torrey will numb the tooth using a local anesthetic.
- Then, he will use a small drill-like instrument to remove the cavity.
- Next, he will remove all the decay.
- Finally, he will use the filling material to fill up the hole or build up other areas of the tooth.
If you’re receiving filling material to build up a tooth or fix a chip, the process will look similar. However, you may not need anesthesia as drilling isn’t always required in these situations.
Most fillings used today will match perfectly with your natural teeth, so you don’t have to worry about awkward, metal fillings. Instead, you won’t even notice the filling, and your teeth will have renewed strength and function.
