Some patients need deeper sedation to feel comfortable and receive dental care, while others just need a bit of help to relax. This is why we provide two main sedation dentistry options at our Pullman office: nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
Learn a bit more about each below:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a colorless, odorless gas that patients inhale through a mask during their dental procedure.
It’s popular in dentistry because it relieves anxiety and acts as a mild sedative, but it’s also very safe. Plus, you will be conscious and able to ask and answer questions, and it’s mild enough to use on children.
While using laughing gas, you may feel happy, giggly, and relaxed. The other great thing is that laughing gas effects wear off within a few minutes once the mask is removed, so you can leave your appointment and go about your life as normal.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is another option that may work better for patients with dental anxieties or phobias. With oral sedation, you’ll still be conscious during the treatment, but the effects are a bit more pronounced.
You’ll be given a pill; we offer Halcion. Oral sedation will make you feel groggy, and many people feel relaxed enough to fall asleep. However, you can still remain conscious and talk if you need to.
Oral sedation is still less intensive than IV sedation, but you’ll need someone to take you to and from your appointment, as the effects don’t wear off as quickly with Nitrous Oxide.
Benefits of Using Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry provides many advantages for those who may feel uneasy at the dentist. While oral sedation isn’t usually an option for children, laughing gas can help everyone get the necessary dental care they need.
Because we use sedation dentistry to help you relax at the dentist, you don’t need to put off coming in for a visit—thus helping you maintain better oral health in your life. It also makes the treatment process go faster, as you won’t need frequent breaks or get overwhelmed.
Sedation dentistry can just make going to the dentist more pleasant, which is a huge benefit.
